While dental implants are generally a safe and reliable procedure, pregnancy introduces some unique considerations. The short version: it’s not typically recommended to undergo implant surgery during pregnancy, but supportive dental care and planning can still happen.
One of the main concerns with placing implants during pregnancy is the need for diagnostic imaging, particularly 3D scans or X-rays. Even though modern dental imaging uses very low radiation and is usually well-shielded, it’s often avoided during the first trimester unless absolutely necessary.
The Impact of Hormonal Changes on Healing
Another concern is that during pregnancy, hormonal changes can cause increased inflammation in the gums, known as pregnancy gingivitis. This makes the healing process for any surgical procedure, including implant placement, less predictable. The immune system also behaves differently during pregnancy, which can affect how the body accepts and integrates the implant.
Temporary Alternatives Until After Birth
That said, if you’re pregnant and facing a dental emergency, we always prioritize your comfort and health. In urgent cases, we may recommend a temporary solution, like a dental flipper or a removable partial denture, to restore function and aesthetics while waiting until after childbirth to complete the implant process.
When Is the Right Time for Implants?
The best course of action is always to plan ahead. If you’re thinking about dental implants and also planning to become pregnant, we suggest completing the treatment beforehand whenever possible. If you discover you’re pregnant while already in the middle of treatment, we’ll pause the surgical phase and manage the situation conservatively.
